The Auckland weather has worsened with the ‘eye of the storm’ expected to pass directly over or very near the region.

Radio Network weather analyst Philip Duncan says, “the predicted air pressure in this depression is unbelievably low and mimics that of modest Atlantic Hurricanes that hit America.”

The MetService has described the storm as ‘potentially destructive and dangerous’ which has hit Auckland with damaging wind gusts.

The Auckland Region Emergency Management Office staff continues to monitor the situation and we are keeping in close contact with MetService and service providers.

People without power, particularly in the Rodney and Waitakere area, should be prepared for extended power outages. The power companies are doing their best to ensure prompt restoration of service.

People need to follow the advice below and listen to you local radio station for further updates.

- Do not go down to the beaches.
- Stay inside, do not travel unless absolutely necessary.
- Stay away from doors and windows. If the wind becomes destructive, shelter further inside the house.
- Open a window on the side of the building away from the wind. This will relieve pressure on the roof and help prevent it lifting.
- Close all curtains to slow down flying glass and airborne objects.
- Shelter and secure pets.

If you live in low-lying areas prone to flooding, you should have a getaway kit ready in case you need to move to higher ground.

- Essential items from your emergency survival kit
- Family documents .eg. passports and drivers license
- Personal items .eg. medication and toiletries
