The recent heavy rain in the region has caused a land slip in a residential street in Torbay. Three houses have been damaged, one seriously, and twelve further houses have been evacuated as a precaution.
Local Civil Defence officers, fire, police and building inspectors went to Lingham Crescent in Torbay on the afternoon of Wednesday 30 July and completed inspections on site.
In the interests of occupant safety a decision was reached to evacuate a number of homes. All residents were cooperative and agreed with the decision made.
Regional Civil Defence Controller, Harry O’Rourke, says that the situation is under control and the area is being closely monitored by North Shore City Council Civil Defence officers.
“A decision will be made on when and if residents can return based on geo technical inspections carried out by North Shore City Council.”
Landslides occur when ground is saturated after heavy rain. They are relatively rare, but homeowners are advised to be alert to the signs: subsidence, cracks in the ground and visible slips.
